JOB DESCRIPTION:
BBC is currently seeking a Script Editor to join our Continuing Drama Series department on a fixed term contract based in Birmingham. The Script Editor reports to the Series Producer in the first instance, and works in close conjunction with the Producers to provide production with successful and effective scripts for this busy show.
Role Responsibility
As a Script Editor you will be responsible for providing editorial support to the editorial team (including Producers and Series Producers). Throughout the production, you will be responsible for representing the interests of the writer to the production team and ensuring that the author consents to major script changes and to convey the writers point of view in his/her absence. You will ensure that the writer is actively involved in script alterations in order to preserve the quality of the working relationship between the Producer/Director and writer.
You will have the opportunity of providing writers with sufficient information to enable the editorial brief to be met in respect of style, content, form and any other special considerations. You will also ensure the consistent treatment of established characters and continuity within the story line and episodes. Your role will include being involved in attending story-lining Meetings as necessary and to contribute critical comments and creative suggestions and to ensure that scripts are prepared in the appropriate format.
During preparation of the script, to alert the Series Producer to all required negative checks (e.g. brand names) and to ensure that all reasonable action has been taken to avoid copyright infringement, libel and defamation.
The Ideal Candidate
The successful candidate will have previous experience in a similar role and script-editing experience. It is essential you will have knowledge of new writers/talent and an understanding of copyright law, along with Writers Guild agreements, contracts and the legal implications of the production process. You will have the ability to generate creative production ideas, treatments and formats along with the ability to display tact and sensitivity when dealing with writers and producers. You will have a professional attitude and the ability to keep abreast of professional, technological and working practice changes. Interpersonal and communication skills are essential in this role, and you will have strong team player skills and ability to work well alongside others.
